Director of Health and Safety - Rebecca Jones

Rebecca is the Director of Health & Safety and has worked at the University since 2014. She leads the Health & Safety Directorate and is responsible for the provision of specialist H&S advice, policies, auditing and training across the range of Queen Mary’s activities. Rebecca works with senior leaders to implement a comprehensive H&S management system for the University and is the senior accountable officer responsible for advising the Principal and Council on the status of health & safety risks and compliance across the University.

 

Health and Safety Administrator - Emily Coughlin

Emily is the Health and Safety Administrator providing general assistance to the directorate on a range of matters. She joined QM permanently in January 2024.

Fire Safety Team 

Fire Safety Compliance Manager - William Knatchbull

William is our Fire Compliance Manager at Queen Mary University London. He joined in June 2023 and works within the Fire Safety Team covering all London campuses and other non- academic sites, his role includes ensuring fire safety compliance and overseeing the work the Fire Safety Team carry out. William has joined us from London Fire Brigade, where he spent nine years working in the Fire Safety Regulation department, covering a variety of roles.

Natalie is the Senior Fire Safety Adviser at Queen Mary University London. She joined the University in 2022 and works alongside the Fire Safety Manager across all London campuses and other non-academic sites. Natalie’s role includes the delivery of Fire Risk Assessments, Fire Safety advice to staff and students, Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPs), Fire Marshal training and investigating fire incidents.

Humanities and Social Science (HSS)

Health and Safety Manager (HSS) and Audit Lead - Ross Baker

Ross is the Health and Safety Manager for the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences as well as the Audit Lead. His role includes supporting the schools within HSS with their day-to-day H&S arrangements and undertaking H&S audits across all areas of Queen Mary to identify both good practices and areas of improvement. He has worked at the University since 2017.

Health and Safety Adviser (HSS) - Siobhan Kavanagh - McLean 

Siobhan is the Health and Safety Adviser for Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. She has worked at the University since 2015. Another aspect of Siobhan's role is to lead on Mental Health First Aid at the University. Siobhan also supports the Audit Lead to undertake H&S audits within Schools, Institutes and Directorates.

Professional Services (PS)

Health and Safety Manager (PS) and Training Lead - Steven Carter

Steven is the Health and Safety Manger for Professional Services and Training Lead.  Has been with Queen Mary since 2014, with a short break at another institution.  The role includes working with the EAF Head of Health and Safety; support to our major events; and developing and delivering both existing and new training courses. Outside of QMUL is an active first aider and trainer with St John Ambulance, providing support to major events across London.

JJ is the Health and Safety Adviser for Professional Services and has worked at QMUL since 2011. He is also responsible for delivering several of our training courses.

Medicine and Dentistry (FMD)

Health and Safety Manager (FMD) and Biological Safety Adviser / Radiation Protection Officer (Queen Mary) - Dr Mark Ariyanayagam

Mark is the Health & Safety Manager covering the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry. Mark also provides expert advice on biological safety and provides the co-ordinating role on ionising radiation (RPO) to the University. Mark has worked at Queen Mary since 2007 in the Health & Safety Team. Previously, Mark was a scientist and worked on tropical disease pathogens at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and the University of Dundee, where he completed his PhD. Mark's first stint as a full-time safety adviser was at the Health Protection Agency at Porton Down in Wiltshire, where he advised researchers and technicians working on dangerous and exotic disease pathogens such as ebola and anthrax. Fun-fact: Mark enjoys sitting at the Oval watching England or Surrey County cricket matches.

Health and Safety Adviser (FMD) and Clinical Waste Lead - Suzanne Mason

Suzanne is the Health and Safety Adviser for the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, and the laboratory generated Clinical Waste Lead for the university, she has worked for Queen Mary since 2003. Suzanne also leads on the training and ongoing support of Physical First Aiders at the University and supports the Biological Safety Adviser with biological safety training courses.

 

Science and Engineering (S&E)

Health and Safety Manager (S&E) and Chemical Safety Adviser / Non-Ionising Radiation Protection Officer (Queen Mary) - Charles Coster

Charles is the Health and Safety Manager for the Faculty of Science and Engineering. He started at Queen Mary in 2022 as the Health and Safety Adviser (S&E).   

Health and Safety Adviser (S&E) and Chemical Waste Lead - Diluka Peiris

Diluka is the Health and Safety Adviser for the Faculty of Science and Engineering. She is also the Chemical Waste Lead of the University. She joined Queen Mary in February 2024.
